There are a few things that I can’t do without in life and one of them is our family holiday abroad each summer. Britain is a beautiful country and there are some fabulous places to visit but it’s the weather. It’s just too unpredictable! So we opt to go abroad for the sun and warm weather, great food and culture. Some of our favourite family holiday destinations include Spain, Greece and Turkey. This year we went to the beautiful Greek Island of Kefalonia and just in case you were wondering, the Greek financial crisis had no effect what so ever on our holiday.
I thought I would share with you some of the things that have contributed to a positive holiday experience when we have gone abroad.
- Eating like the locals. One of the best things about going away is trying out the local cuisine. In my experience eating out in restaurants that are popular with the locals is a great way to really enjoy authentic, simple and freshly prepared food. What I have also found is that these types of restaurants are usually not in the touristy areas and although they are no-frills, the food is divine! This year we were pleased to find Avithos Preview Taverna and Tziviras in Kefalonia. The option of having takeaways at Tziviras was great as we were able to dine in the comfort of our villa (also more relaxed with the kids being so young).
- Since having the children we have always opted for self-catering accommodation which has offered us greater flexibility, privacy and freedom. I would highly rate all the owner managed accommodations that we have stayed in. From experience the accommodations have been clean, safe, well maintained and better equipped. We have been really lucky too with the owners who have been attentive and shared lots of tips and information about the local area with us.
- When booking our flight, we always select an airline with convenient flight times during the day as well as opting to pay for what we consider as must have extras like priority boarding or reserved seats. This way we make sure that as a family we get to seat together or at least near to each other.
- I happen to hold one of the best UK debit card for spending abroad. Although I didn’t use it this year in Kefalonia as the current travel advice is to take cash to cover the duration of the holiday, it has been useful to have on previous holidays. Normally if you use a debit card abroad, there's usually a non-sterling transaction fee which applies to both purchases and ATM withdrawals. I am glad to say that my debit card does not attract any of these charges or a non-sterling fee for withdrawing my money. I am not sure exactly how much money I have saved over the years but hey, every little helps! Apart from avoiding bank charges, the card offers peace of mind with the greater protection against fraud.
I have shared some photos of our holiday in Kefalonia in this blog. If you are about to go on holiday whether abroad or at home, I hope you have a lovely holiday.Last modified on
