7 of my favourite tips in the kitchen

I love to cook! So it is always great when I learn a new tip that either makes my life in the kitchen easier or helps to improve my cooking skills. Here are 7 tips that I love to use in my kitchen.

  • Plantains – peeling these can stain your hands and nails as well as leaving a sticky substance on your hands. To prevent this, I normally rub my hands with cooking oil prior to peeling the plantains.

  • Best pizza base dough – I have used the cold proving method which allows the dough to rise at a slower pace. I usually leave my dough in the fridge for 3 days. The end results are amazing and worth the wait.

  • Roasting meat in the oven – I always add a bit of water in the roasting tray to prevent my roast from drying out. This leaves the meat really succulent and tender.

  • Basmati rice – I find soaking the rice grains for 15 minutes before cooking helps to make my rice really fluffy once cooked.

  • Onions and garlic – sometimes getting the peel off can be tricky but soaking them for about 5 minutes makes the skin a lot easier to peel. This trick really comes in handy when you have lots of garlic to peel.

  • Lemons – rolling a lemon between the palm and a hard surface is a great way to get more juice out of a lemon meaning less waste. This trick can be applied to limes too.

  • Tenderising pork. There is nothing worse than dry pork meat! To prevent this I always sprinkle about a teaspoonful of white wine vinegar on pork chops or a pork joint then allow the meat to marinade at room temperature for at least 30 minutes before following tip no.3 (above).

Have you got any tips or tricks that you use in your kitchen? Would love to hear them!
